4WD Ground School
The Ascend Overland LLC "4WD Ground School" is a classroom-based selection of content from the available training modules shown below. You will learn, bumper-to-bumper, how all the vehicle systems work together to operate in various terrain scenarios. This includes powertrain and related components like engine, transmission, transfer case, drive shafts, differentials, lockers, axles, wheels, brakes, and tires. It also includes calculating and adjusting tire pressure, transmission/gear selection, suspension, and bead-lock wheels. We'll put it all together in a way that allows you to better understand what the vehicle is doing and why you might get stuck. Field expedient repair will be discussed along with tool selection. We'll briefly cover the core driving and spotting skills needed for effective off-road driving. However, the in-depth skills portion is a separate course AO teaches typically at an off-road park. We will also talk extensively about recovery gear selection, ratings, and calculations. This includes proper use of Hi-Lift and other jacks along with an introduction to winching best practices. It also includes what gear to consider purchasing vs. what gear to avoid because of dangerous designs or propensity for misuse. This course is for anyone getting started with off-road driving or overlanding, but also for seasoned trail riders that have not had formal education and might be looking for new nuggets of wisdom. The course fee includes an extensive booklet that you can stash in a seat-back pocket for when you might need a reminder. December 8th, 2024 9AM-5PM
2WD/AWD Ground School
Learn about how your vehicle systems work and what to do when facing breakdowns or minor obstacles. We'll cover a basic understanding of your vehicle's components, how they might fail, and how to fix common issues. Additionally, we discuss the driving skills that can often mitigate adverse conditions like ice, snow, mud, and sand. If you do get stuck, we will cover the equipment used for minor recovery of conventional 2WD vehicles and which minor upgrades could greatly improve safety and recoverability. Some iterations of this course will also discuss general security tactics for staying safe in high-risk situations or locations. This course is for anyone that drives a car, truck, or SUV that isn't interested in off-road driving and rock crawling but wants to know how to properly set the parking brake (yes, you’re probably doing that incorrectly), change a tire, jump start a battery, and safely recover your vehicle during the next inclement weather event. The course fee includes a booklet that you can stash in a seat-back pocket for when you might need a reminder. December 7th, 2024 9AM-3PM
